One of the oldest methods for beautifying the eyes is applying kajal, which has many fans among women. However, nowadays, fewer women prefer kajal over eyeliner to enhance their eyes.
Kajal has numerous benefits for the eyes, and many people used it not only for beauty but also to address problems or ailments. If you want to use kajal to decorate your eyes, don’t miss this section from the world of fashion.SelmaDermaDon’t miss the guide on how to make kajal.
Traditional Kajal Preparation
In the past, people used a lamp called a tallow lamp to illuminate their homes, using “Kanto oil” extracted from a plant seed called Bidanjil (Kanto).
They would drill a hole in the trunk of an elm tree to extract the oil, making a special pestle from the same tree to rotate it, with a hole at the bottom for the oil to escape.
To prepare it, they would put a stone over a wick that was soaked in oil and burning, allowing the smoke produced to be used as kajal.
The stone for kajal is called antimony. To make kajal, they grind the blue-colored antimony stone and mix the powdered form with other materials, then apply it to the eyes and eyebrows.
How to Prepare Eye KajalAlmond
To make kajal using almond nuts orHazelnut:
- Place some hazelnuts and almonds on a flame spreader after removing two shells.
- Then, hold a metal dish like a tray just above the flame spreader.
- As they burn completely, soot will be produced.
- After burning the nuts, scrape the soot created on the tray with a knife or sharp object and transfer it into the container prepared for storing the kajal.
How to Prepare Eye Kajal from Cow Bone
To prepare kajalfrom cow bone:
- First, remove some marrow from the bone and place it in a container.
- Then, place some gauze or bandage in such a way that the end is in the oil, with the top sticking out.

Best Types of Eye Kajal
The best kajal available is stone kajal or Mecca kajal, which has many benefits but unfortunately has two flaws.
1. It is gray and pale in color.
2. It contains tiny particles that can irritate the eyes.
After stone kajal, animal kajal is one of the best, although its preparation is difficult and it can smudge due to its oily texture.
The third kajal is made from nuts.
Best Types of Kajal Containers
Kajal containers are made from various materials like wood, stone, or brass metal. The best kajal container is wooden since the fibers can easily clean the residue during the removal of the stick from the container, resulting in smooth, residue-free kajal.
Benefits of Eye Kajal:
Kajal not only beautifies the eyes but also has other therapeutic properties, such as thickening and strengthening eyebrows and eyelashes, strengthening the eyes, anti-inflammatory, and alleviating eye irritation. Some modern chemical-based kajals not only lack quality but can also cause eyebrow and eyelash loss.
Kajal typically contains some lead, which can sometimes pose health risks. Lead is absorbed by the body’s tissues and has the most toxic effect on the brain and nerves.
Imam Sadiq (AS) says:
Kajal promotes hair growth, stops tears, improves saliva, and brightens vision. Applying kajal at bedtime protects against eye ailments (like cataracts).
The Prophet (PBUH) urged the use of kajal made from antimony, saying:“Use this kajal as it helps remove anything that enters the eye and clarifies vision.”
It is narrated that:A Bedouin came to the Prophet (PBUH) named Faleed, who had watery eyes. The Prophet (PBUH) observed, “I see your two eyes are wet”; the man replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah (PBUH), my eyes are weak as you see.” The Prophet (PBUH) responded, “Use antimony, for it is the brightness of the eyes.”
Imam Baqir (AS) says:“Using antimony kajal promotes eyelash growth, sharpens vision, and helps maintain alertness.”
Imam Reza (AS) says:“Anyone suffering from weak vision should apply antimony kajal seven times at night.”Eye Kajal
