Traditional Kajal Preparation

In the past, people used a lamp called a fat lamp to light their homes, which burned with “kento oil” made from the seeds of a plant called bidanjil (kento).

They would carve the trunk of an elm tree to create kento oil, making a device from the same wood that would rotate and allow the oil to flow out from a hole created underneath.

To prepare it, they took a stone and placed it on a wick soaked in oil and burning; the smoke produced, called kajal, would then be applied to their eyes.

The stone for kajal is called antimony. To make kajal, they grind this blue stone, mix the powdered form with other substances, and then apply it to the eyes and eyebrows.

Best Type of Kajal

The best kajal available is stone kajal or kahal of Mecca, which has many properties, but unfortunately, it has two drawbacks.

1. Its color is gray and faint.

2. It contains fine particles that can irritate the eyes.

After stone kajal, animal kajal is one of the best but is difficult to prepare and tends to smear under the eyes due to its oily nature.

The third kind of kajal is made from nuts.

Best Material for Kajal Holders

Kajal holders are made from various materials such as wood, stone, or brass. The best type of kajal holder is wooden because the wood fibers easily clean the residues of kajal when pulling the stick out, giving you smooth kajal without any clumps.
